Episode#13 How do I balance short and long-term goals? -with Alexander Hipp (founder of Beyond)
Long-term vs. short-term. Big vision vs. immediate impact.
It’s a pressure many of us feel, but is it actually achievable? Or just wishful thinking?
I’ve seen companies with grand visions but no clear execution path. Others hit every number but lose sight of where they’re headed. And then there are those who succeed, by balancing the system, not just a single team.
Finding the right mix of long and short-term thinking is fundamental to success, but if you are wondering: how do I do it in practice? We’ve got you!
In this week’s episode of #ToughStuff, I sat down with Alexander Hipp to break it down. We’ve worked across corporations, scale-ups, and startups, and while it depends, we found concrete tactics that work in any context:
Start with your company’s reality. Not every company needs a long-term plan or a perfect balance. Find the real leverage point.
Think beyond your team. True balance happens at the company level. And no, not every product team needs or can work with long and short-term objectives.
Connect the dots. Visually and vocally as often as you can to make sure your team’s work connects to the bigger picture. Use decisions trees, connect the strategy with your sprint goals, repeat the scope of the team often. Linking tactics to strategy makes trade-offs clearer and decision-making easier.
